Summer Camps Still Rockin’

PRC was once again afforded the opportunity to partner with the PA American Water Company (PAWC) to offer the third annual Wonderful World of Water Day Camp. Three day camps, funded by PAWC and offered in Allegheny, Butler and Chester Counties, provided two fun-filled days each of outdoor fun and education around water issues. Green Tree Borough (Allegheny County), Jennings Environmental Education Center (Butler County), and Coatesville Recreation Department generously provided beautiful settings for the camps.

Campers, ages 7-12, explored the watershed, water basics, and current water quality issues through interactive instruction, hands-on activities, crafts, hikes and games.  Highlights included visits from some very exciting guests. Verna McGinley, a Pittsburgh naturalist, afforded campers the opportunity to get up close and personal with water critters such as frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, and salamanders. Wil Taylor, naturalist at Jennings Environmental Education Center, provided a glimpse into the daily life of an early twentieth century coal miner –as young as seven-years old. Wil also taught the campers about abandoned mine drainage (AMD) and the passive treatment system in place at Jennings. Bill Bartlett of Earth Force was a favorite among campers with a large scale nonpoint source (NPS) pollution activity that allowed campers to build a watershed and observe its lakes and rivers as they were affected by various sources of NPS pollution. Campers, donning goggles and rubber gloves and using chemistry equipment behaved as young chemists as PAWC staff guided them in experimenting with water filtration and purification techniques. Campers also learned about how local animals are affected by impacts on our watershed, did water testing and enjoyed nature hikes/litter pick-ups at our beautiful camp sites and had many thrills playing games such as water balloon volleyball and various water relays. Even meals and snacks were used to convey educational messages. Campers learned about the importance of waste reduction by packing zero waste lunches and about surface pollution entering the aquifer by building and then enjoying the Edible Earth Parfait.

As a result of PAWC’s generous commitment to this endeavor all campers were able to enjoy the Wonderful World of Water Day Camps free-of-charge! Many campers expressed an interest in returning next year and facilitators as well look forward to partnering next summer with PAWC to provide this fun-filled educational experience.
