Purple Loosestrife choking your pond?
English Ivy suffocating your trees?
Multiflora Rose making your meadow an impenetrable thicket?
Mile-a-minute taking over your town?
And are those chemical weed killers really safe?
Come to PRC’s Controlling Invasive Plants workshop for tips on how to destroy the weeds without destroying the planet.
Invasive plant species are those that are not native to our region and which quickly grow out of control because they lack natural competitors. These plants limit the diversity of beneficial native species by crowding them out and have many other negative effects, including damage to property through rapid uncontrolled growth.
Everyone from garden centers to government agencies encourage exasperated gardeners to just spray some weed killer on these seemingly indestructible invasives. But a number of recent studies show that these products are not nearly as safe as they were once claimed to be, for us or our environment. We look at the current research on these chemicals and find a worrisome picture potentially tied to problems ranging from disappearing frogs to ADHD in our kids.
But don’t worry - we won’t leave you at the mercy of the weeds! The class includes information on how to identify invasive plants before they grow and spread, and lays out a comprehensive approach to controlling invasives without relying on chemicals, from regularly surveying your property to choosing the right native plants that will compete with and eventually crowd out the invasives.
