Cigarette Litter Prevention

Did you know that cigarette butts are one of the most commonly littered item in the United States?

Did you know that cigarette butts can take up to 5 years to decompose!

PRC understands that cigarette litter is not only an eyesore but also an environmental hazard and is working to rid communities of this unsightly litter.  Through funding from Keep America Beautiful, PA Department of Environmental Protection and the Laurel Foundation PRC was able to place over 110 cigarette ash receptacles in eight different communities across the state.  To learn more about PRC’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Programs click here.

Adopt-a-Block and Litter Pickups

PRC has worked with a number of communities, providing them with resources to help start Adopt-a-Block programs and organize cleanup events.  If you or your community group is in the Pittsburgh area and needs help in starting up a litter prevention program or event contact PRC at 412.488.7490. For Southeast or Central Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, call 610-353-1555 extension 224

Graffiti Prevention

Studies have proven that graffiti negatively effects property values, decreases retail sales in business districts, heightens the fear of gang activity, and attracts other forms of crime.  Therefore the removal and prevention of graffiti will bring about safer, more viable communities.  PRC has worked together with Pittsburgh area neighborhoods to help them develop and implement graffiti prevention programs.  If you would like to learn more about these programs contact PRC at 412.488.7490 ext. 236.

Clean Pittsburgh Commission's Clean Pittsburgh's 'Stewards' Meet n' Greet Mixer

For months, the Clean Pittsburgh Commission (a network of city departments, non-profits, businesses, and community groups working to make Pittsburgh a cleaner, more beautiful city) contacted people in every city neighborhood, identifying leaders who organize neighborhood cleanups.  These people became Clean Pittsburgh Stewards.  On January 17th 2008 the Clean Pittsburgh Commission hosted a Meet n’ Greet Mixer for the Clean Pittsburgh’s Stewards at the Schenley Park Ice Rink.  Joining the Clean Pittsburgh Commission at this first Clean Pittsburgh Steward event was Mayor Ravenstahl, Councilman Peduto, Councilwoman Harris, and Councilman Dowd, and City department heads and supervisors. The City officials were on hand to answer steward’s questions and provide information on the progress their departments are making on such topics as litter, graffiti, vacant lot cleanup, and abandoned cars.  The event was a huge success with over half of the City neighborhoods representated.

The event was also marked by the release of the Clean Pittsburgh Commission's 2007 State of the City Report. To read the report click here.
