A Brief Overview of
Our History

The oldest citizen action environmental organization
in PA; founded in 1939 as the Associated Clubs for Roadside Development,
an outgrowth of the Garden Club Federation of PA.

In 1940 the name was changed to PA Roadside
Council
|
 |
Original Board of Directors included Hilda
V. Fox, Cynthia Calhoun, J. Howard Pew, Gifford Pinchot, Nicholas Roosevelt,
the presidents of the Garden Club Federation of PA, the PA Federation of
Women's Clubs and directors from the Keystone Auto Club and West Penn Motor
Club, Fidelity Bank and Gulf Oil Company

PRC's first annual budget was $2500, contributed
in great part by its directors.

In 1985 PRC changed its name to PA Resources
Council

PRC is financially viable and has been for
59 years

PRC introduced the
LITTERBUG in the mid forties
|
 |
PRC played a major role in organizing Keep
America Beautiful in the mid forties and gave KAB permission to use the
litterbug so long as it was not put on a billboard.

PRC was one of the founding members of the
National Coalition to Preserve Scenic Beauty, now Scenic America.

PRC is a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)3
and a 509A IRS status

 |
PRC played a major role in bringing mandatory
recycling to PA
|
 |
PRC is recognized internationally for its
leadership role in environmental shopping, recycling and waste reduction.

PRC was the first environmental organization
with an electronic bulletin board (PenCycle)

 |
PRC is a member of the Environmental Fund
for PA

 |
PRC has sponsored 19 recycling conferences
(10 in conjunction with PA DEP) since 1980
|

PRC staffed the state's first recycling hotline
in 1984. Between 1984-1989, PRC responded to an average of 5000 requests
per year for telephone and written information.

PRC has more than 50 Publications on topics
ranging from recycling to planting trees.

 |
PRC's membership is as diverse as its program
and includes individuals, businesses, civic groups, government officials,
fellow environmentalists, recyclers, students and teachers.

PRC in 1989 introduced the only national Environmental
Living hotline, answering requests for information from all 50 states.
|
 |
PRC developed the Delaware County Household
Hazardous Waste Hotline.

PRC has created the Philadelphia Commercial
Recycling Hotline in 1995.

 |
PRC, along with the Department of Environmental
Protection, developed the Pennsylvania Litterbug Hotline, taking littering
reports from citizens of the Commonwealth.

PRC celebrated its diamond anniversary in 1999!
